Briefly put, the aircraft he was Wireless Operator/Air Gunner in was attacked by a JU88, pilot gave an order to prepare to bail out, this was mis-heard and Sgt Steer bailed out. Pilot regained control of the Lancaster and returned to base only to discover his W/O missing. Sgt Steer subsequently wrote from Stalag VIIIB to his pilot regarding the rather unfortunate happening as seen by the attached copy.
