Thomas, A
Sergeant Alfred Thomas
My father’s first name was Alfred but in the army he was known as Tom. He was born in Beverley on 12/10/1914 to parents Walter & Agnes.
He joined the Coldstream Guards on 01/12/1933, his regimental number was 2656222. He was sent to Egypt on 23/11/1937 and served in Palestine during the troubles before and during the war.
In WW2 he fought in Egypt, probably on Wavell’s push, Operation Compass, and retreat and was taken prisoner of war on 27/05/1941 during Rommel’s offensive. He appears on WO392/1
I don’t have any information on how he got to Stalag 344 but I suspect it was in transit through Italy. At the time of his capture he was a Sergeant. He spent in total 3 years and 318 days as a POW. I would be grateful if you would let me known if any information turns up about my father or anyone who would have known him from his time as a POW, feel free to provide my email to anyone who has such information, the image is unclear.
I’ve added another POW group photo I have although I don’t have any info on this and two other pictures of my father one showing him in his guardsman uniform not long after he signed on and one on his embarking to Palestine. Another picture shows two German Guards probably from Stalag 344, who were apparently twins. According to the diary I sent you after his ‘long march’ he ended up in Stalag 9A then 7A where he was freed.
