John Andrew Richard Thompson, born: 1 Jan 1920; Limavady Ireland.
Enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces, Essex Scottish Regiment 27 May 1940 A22270
He was wounded and taken prisoner in Dieppe France on 19 Aug 1942 and transported by train (cattle car) to
Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf /Stalag 344 arriving there approximately 4 days later.
After being tied/chained for quite some time, (he recollected 14 months, but that seems inordinately long to me), he was put in a work party at a wood factory in Tichau Poland (near Katowitz).
He was involved in a failed escape attempt from the Tichau work camp when the tunnel he had dug with Eddy Kemp and another prisoner collapsed.
He was subsequently sent to Luckenwalde Stalag IIIb where he remained until the camp was liberated by the Russion army 22 April 1945.
He was turned over by the Russians to the American Army at the river Elbe.
