Private H. K. Tourle, 7732 Support Company, 2nd Royal Durban Light Infantry (RDLI) , 4th SA infantry Brigade, 2nd South African Infantry DivisionMy father-in-law was captured at Tobruk and shipped across from Benghazi to Brindisi and then held at a camp in Bari before being transferred to Gravina,
From Gravina he was sent to a work camp near Padua ( letters he wrote indicate that this camp was Camp 120/XI).
He escaped from Padua after the armistice and made his way to Ortona where he was recaptured. He was then sent to Germany and Poland where he survived working on the coal mines and the Death March from Poland to Germany. He was rescued near Regensberg by the US Eighth Army.My wife and I are touring Italy at present and have visited the camp at Gravina with the assistance of a local Italian living in Altamura.
