George Temple Tutt
Information provided by Sandra de Swardt (Cape Town RSA):
My Father, George Temple Tutt, born 24th September 1923, was captured at Tobruk June1942, sent to Benghazi and then to Camp 82, Laterino.
He escaped (walked out, he told us) when the Italians abandoned the Camp 82 in September 1943. He and others lived in the mountains and, thanks to the very kind local Italians, managed to survive somehow. He spoke about Partisans, Free French and then being handed over to the American Army.
He was in the South African 2nd Division. Sadly, George died (lung cancer) in April 1975.
I was not old enough to have questioned him more about his war experiences. He never volunteered stories, but we did manage to hear some as we grew up and asked questions. My father married Beryl Brooker and they had 5 children. I am the 2nd oldest. My grandmother, Mrs. A.M. Batchelor, sent letters and parcels to him while he was in Camp 82.
