According to his war diary, he was captured at a farmhouse in Pennapiedimonte, Italy on 22 April 1944. On the “Questionnaire for ex POWs” Ernest records that he was detained in three camps:-

Jun.1944 – Aug.1944 – Camp VIIA, Moosburg, near Munich

Aug.1944 – Feb.1945 – Camp Stalag 344, Lamsdorf, near Breslau

Feb.1945 – Mar.1945 – Camp XIIIC, Hammelberg

Mar.1945 – Apr.1945 – Working at Kitzingen, near Nuremburg on a) demolition b) repairing of runway on local airfield.

His war diary is, I believe, held by his son, along with a slice of German black bread (his daily camp ration), which Ernest sent home to his mother.
