Subject: Postcards from Stalag VIIIB
I thought you might be interested in seeing the attached documents which recently came to light, which are two postcards sent by my father Leonard Thomas Walters to my mother (at that time his girlfriend) whilst a POW in Stalag VIIIB following his unfortunate capture at Dunkirk early on in the war.
I’m unsure what regiment he was in but the postcard states E161 which I believe to be the working party number he was attached to during his internment, strangely they are not dated but I do know that mum said that she did not hear from dad for over a year following his capture in June 1940
Having browsed around a few websites I was unable to find reference of this number so not sure where he was billeted, although it has been mentioned he spent time on a farm in Poland.
My father is second from the left in the uniformed group and second from the right in what I call the pyjama and pipe group, do you have any idea of the significance of the pipes and dress?
I have copied both sides of the postcards so that you can look at them properly and hope they are of interest to you.
