Private Ronald Sydney Webb
My maiden name is Anne Webb and I am the daughter of:
Ronald Sydney Webb – Private 281359 of the R.A.S.C. R.H.GG.H. (nationality British)
who was a prisoner in Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf / Stalag 344 during WWII.
If I may give a brief summary of his wartime experiences.
Dad enlisted in the UK (London) sometime in 1941 with the Royal Army Service Corps.
I have been unable to find out what the initials of his regiment, ie R.H.GG.H., stand for.
He was shipped to Durban in 1941, then on to N.A. where he was captured in the Sahara Desert in 1942.
He was badly wounded and shipped to Italy where he was in hospital for 10-11 months.
Around August 1943, he was taken by train to Lamsdorf, Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf / Stalag 344, where I understand he worked in the salt mines.
He was on the death march in early 1945 and probably liberated by the Americans.
He passed away in September 1967 at the young age of 46, which was attributed to the hardships he endured during the war.
I have recently donated his Stalag VIIIB metal ID, which I have kept all these years, to the Ingleburn Heritage Military Precinct Museum.
The curator there kindly researched the history of his wartime movements for me through regiment details, and I have only recently discovered the history of the Stalag VIIIB camp.
