My father, Mark Alexander Welsh, M.M., was with the 2nd Batt Scots Guards and the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) in North Africa(1937-1945). He was taken prisoner on Stampalia Island (Astypalaia) Dodecanese. I knew he was a POW and service documents I have show that he was in Camp Stalag 344 and 357 (Stalag VIIIB) from October 1943 until April 1945 when he escaped. He is mentioned in “G Patrol” (chapter, The Last Road Watch) and “In Rommel’s Backyard” (chapter nine). Unfortunately my father is now dead and I only wish while he was alive that I had asked and understood more.
