Subject: ESCAPEES!
My name is Paul Whatcott. I am the grandson of Eric Whiteside who was a trooper held in the Lambinowice camp in the 2nd world war.
He passed away on New Year’s Day this year and thought it would be interesting to find out about his wartime experiences. From the records I have found his British army number was 7907188 but more importantly his POW number was 34351.
From his account he was going to be shot for not handing over cigarettes to a German officer and was tied up against a wall to be shot the next day. 2 comrades in the dark untied him and the 3 of them escaped.(I am unsure of the other 2 names although was had a cockney accent) From there all I know is that they ended up hiding in a German barn owned by farm family of which the son was a captain in the German army. He as well as the other family members knew of my granddad and other 2 in hideout there but fed and watered them. My granddad fell in love with the daughter Anni but he had to return home at the end of the war as he was missing presumed dead. He kept in touch with Anni by writing for a few years after. On one of the photos there is a photo stamp from Wesenberg and I’m guessing that’s where the farm was but unsure.
