Stanley John Woodman, my father, was a Sapper (from the French word sappe – spadework, or trench) in the Royal Engineers, Army No. 2069751
He was confirmed as POW, No. 220907, on 24/10/1942 as a result of military action against the Italian Army and the Nazi German Afrika Korps at Cyrenaica. Cyrene, as it is now known, in the northern coastal region of Libya.
He was initially held in P.O.W. Camp number PG 70 Monturano (Parma) Italy but moved to Stalag VIIIB/344 Lamsdorf following the capitulation of Italy in 1943.
